Harris Hungry for More

July 12, 2007

As the youngest of 11, 49ers cornerback Walt Harris grew up having to pull out all stops to make sure he didn’t come away from the dinner table hungry.

“It was survival of the fittest,” said Harris. “When food was put down, you had to hurry to get up in there because there was going to be a fight for it. I’d try and pull the ‘hey, I’m the youngest, help me out’ so I could get some.”

Something to Whine About

July 12, 2007

tomlinblog.pngIf the Steelers thought training camp was tough during the Bill Cowher era, they’ll find it nothing less than brutal under first-year coach Mike Tomlin.

Last summer in his 15th and final season with the Steelers, Cowher scheduled just six two-day practices. This summer, Tomlin was scheduled 15.

“It will give them something to whine about,” Tomlin said of the demanding work load he plans for the Steelers once they report to St. Vincent College on Monday, July 23.

Gordon has MADDness to His Method

July 1, 2007

Roger Goodell, the law-and-order commissioner, the new boss who suffers fools and ne’er-do-wells with below-zero tolerance, should have a picture of Cletis Gordon on the wall of his plush NFL digs. And he should shine a light on it.

Given all the bad things going on outside the lines of Goodell’s league, from Pacman Jones to Tank Johnson to a great chunk of the Bengals roster, the commish, who Monday spoke with the 255 college football players drafted this year about the evils out there, always can use another role model.

What Will Steelers Get with Tomlin?

The Steel Curtain reappeared at Mean Joe strength. On Christmas Eve 2005, Pittsburgh took over Cleveland Browns Stadium. The only fans left at the end of a 41-0 pillaging wore black and gold.

The Steelers then pounded their way to four playoff wins, seized Super Bowl XL and had their old biceps back.

As quickly as it reappeared, the Steel Curtain was transformed into doilies and lace.

In one stretch in 2006, the Steelers were 3-7. It would have been 2-8 had the Browns not blown a 20-10 fourth-quarter lead.

A Little College Reunion

Ronald Curry got some help from his friends on Saturday.

Julius Peppers and Dré Bly, Curry’s buds from back in their North Carolina Tar Heel days, were among the players who participated in Curry’s football clinic at Darling Stadium that was informal and free.

“I knew Ronald back in high school,” said Bly, who attended Western Branch in Chesapeake, while Curry led Hampton High to three consecutive state championships from 1995-1997. “I was a big fan of his in high school, an admirer of a guy that was so talented. I brag on him all the time, about how as a high school athlete, he was a celebrity around here.”
