Gordon’s Two Ints Help Charges Topple 49ers

It is not easy being a backup quarterback, as Alex Smith learned Friday night..

The San Francisco quarterback tossed a pair of interceptions, as the 49ers fell to the San Diego Chargers 20-17.

Smith recovered a bit in the second half, leading his team on a 90-yard touchdown drive which he capped with a pass to tight end Bill Bajema.

Smith was relegated to backup QB chores for the season last week, as the 49ers opted to go with J.T. O’Sullivan behind center.

Cletis Gordon was the recipient of both Smith’ picks, and actually could have had a third if he had not dropped another pass attempt.

San Diego quarterback Billy Volek hit Mike Tolbert on a six-yard scoring strike and Nate Kaeding drilled field goals covering 49 and 35 yards.

San Francisco kicker Joe Nedney answered with a 52-yard field goal and the 49ers kept things close with Delanie Walker’s 101-yard kickoff return for a score.
