Jenkins tries to put injuries behind him

February 2, 2008

c-jenkins.pngNobody was looking forward to the Green Bay Packers’ first-round playoff bye more than defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins. And when you get a load of the laundry list of injuries he’s been playing with all season, you understand why.

“I’ve had that ankle from last year that still bothers me,” Jenkins said, preparing to give the rundown before the players began their four-day postseason break, with practice resuming Friday. “Then I sprained both ankles. Both knees. Pulled a muscle in my side. Messed up both wrists. Oh yeah, my shoulder. Actually, I did both shoulders. I stung my neck on one side.”

Then, he forced a smile. “And on top of that,” he said, “little nicks and bruises and stuff like that.”

But more painful than any of his injuries to the uber-conscientious Jenkins is the fact he hasn’t lived up to the four-year, $16 million extension he received as a restricted free agent this offseason.

Having entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2003 and lived a paycheck-to-paycheck — when he was actually receiving one and wasn’t unemployed, working as a landscaper, that is — NFL existence his first three years as a pro, he desperately wanted to prove he was worth the money after becoming a starter late last season and recording a career-high 6½ sacks despite missing two games with the aforementioned ankle injury.

Packers bank on repeat performance Sunday from Jenkins

January 17, 2008

The Green Bay Packers will start practicing today (Wednesday) for Sunday night’s NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.Among other things, they’ll look for another solid performance from defensive end Cullen Jenkins. He was nagged by a series of injuries during the regular season.

But in last Saturday’s divisional playoff against Seattle, he had 1.5 sacks and three total tackles.

Defensive coordinator Bob Sanders said Jenkins played very well against both the run and the pass. He said Jenkins looked quick, and he generated a lot of pressure.

All in all, it was the performance the Packers were looking for, after Jenkins signed a four-year contract extension last spring worth $16 million.

Jenkins Brothers to Meet Again

November 15, 2007

Because they play the same position, they won’t exactly be knocking heads on the field Sunday, but the game will be special to the Jenkins brothers nonetheless.

Green Bay’s Cullen and Carolina’s Kris, both defensive tackles, will take the same field Sunday for the first time since the 2004 season opener, when the Packers beat Carolina on a Monday night. (The Packers played in Carolina again in 2005, but Kris was injured and did not play.)

Jenkins Catches Break with Bye

October 17, 2007

While this week’s bye was welcomed by all 53 of the Green Bay Packers Tuesday — as evidenced by the Amazing Race along Highway 172 as the players hustled to Austin Straubel airport to leave town — no one needs the five days off more than defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins.

For while a number of veterans — especially quarterback Brett Favre and cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson — are taking the time off to nurse bothersome aches and pains, Jenkins has dealt with more nagging injuries than anyone else during the team’s 5-1 start. None of the injuries has been enough to force him to miss a game, but they’ve taken their toll on a player who looked like a Pro Bowl candidate during the preseason.

“I feel more beat up than I have in any other year,” Jenkins said. “I’ll probably feel better (after the bye), because I don’t think I can feel any worse than I do now.”

Jenkins shows value of never giving up

August 17, 2007

In fall 2003, Cullen Jenkins was out of football and working for a landscaping company in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Green Bay Packers cut him in training camp that year, and no other team bothered to offer him a tryout.

It got to the point when Jenkins started thinking about a future without football.

“I had a lot of doubts on whether or not I was good enough or whether or not teams would think I was good enough to play,” Jenkins recalled. “(I) still had that hope, where you’re hoping you would make it. But you start to think about, ‘What happens if I don’t? What am I going to do?’”
